KOTA BHARU: Kelantan Umno will sent a special delega-tion to meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to appeal that the airport here be upgraded to become an international airport.
The move comes after re-ports that the Federal Government was upgrading the airport in Pahang to international status.
State Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Annuar Musa said the delegation would meet Abdullah next month.
“We will try to convince him that the Sultan Yahya Petra airport in Pengkalan Chepa here is more viable than the airport in Pahang to be upgraded to international status,” he said ad-ding that Kelantan Umno was not competing with Pahang.
“Kelantan borders Thailand and the passenger load here is the highest in the east coast and there is potential for the development of oil and gas industries here,” he told a press conference.
“The airport here can be-come a hub for the east coast whereas Pahang is located nearer to Kuala Lumpur.
“The airport can act as a catalyst to spur higher growth here especially with the eastern corridor coming onstream soon,” Annuar said.
